This 15th Century Castle is a unique and beautiful place. Set in the Irish midlands in Co. Laois, it is the perfect setting for a relaxing rural break in luxurious and historic surroundings.
Situated in 30 acres of beautiful country side, the area is renowned for fishing, shooting, riding, hunting, hill walking, mountain climbing and golf. The Castle can be rented weekly or for short breaks for private parties and weddings either self-catering or staffed.
Situated between Roscrea and Borris-on-Ossory, the Castle was built in 1480 by the Gaelic Chieftain MacGiollaphadraig, meaning son of the servant of Patrick. The castle was partially destroyed by Cromwell's forces in 1647 but was restored in 1836 by a Mr. Ely who found a hoard of gold on the land. Ely was shot by an angry tenant and never lived in the castle. The castle was then used as a granary and afterwards fell into disuse, until the present owner bought it in 1990 and restored it.
**Please note that the castle cannot be classed as a luxury holiday let. The interior would best be described as 'shabby chic' and most of the amenities are fairly basic which is why it's advertised at the price that it is.
The Castle offers its guests a wonderful setting for their stay. In a world of generic hotel rooms, the accommodation offered here is truly unique. Each room has its own charm, from the gothic arches, timber beams, exposed stone, and heavy wooden doors.
The Castle has five floors. On the ground floor there is a mahogany bar that can be used for parties and drinks. There are also stored logs for the fire, two loos and an electric shower. On the first floor is the main banquet hall with a very large fireplace. There is also a kitchen with all mod cons just off the banquet hall and two galley spaces with pots, pans, plates, microwave, washing machine, dryer, fridge-freezer etc.
On the second floor there is a fourposter bedroom with three additional single beds. There is also a single room, a galley loo and a large bathroom. On the third floor there is a panelled dormitory room with eight singles and a bathroom. All bed linen is included. Cots and high chairs are available.
On the fourth floor there is the very large great hall (used as the party room) with huge fire place, sofas, table tennis and snooker table. There is a door that leads from the hall to the roof with views for 100 miles. Outside the castle sits in 30 acres of private grounds with plenty of parking.
