The Ancient Moated Farmstead is a manor house with over 1000 years of recorded history. It is located in private gardens and grounds on the edge of the fishing village of Staithes on the Yorkshire Heritage Coast and the heather clad North Yorkshire Moors.
The house is set in a walkers paradise with cliff tops and deeply wooded ravines to explore. The highest cliffs in England, harbour, bays and beaches are just a mile away.
Nearby attractions include Whitby for its abbey and link with the country’s longest steam railway at Grosmont, Saltburn with its Victorian pier, Sandsend for the Mulgrave estate walks and its three castles, Runswick in a glorious sandy bay where fossils can be found on the beach. Major country houses such as Duncombe Park and Castle Howard are within easy travelling distance.
The estate is divided in to 3 separate buildings that surround the courtyard: The Cottage (sleeping 4), The Court (sleeping 10) and The Hall (sleeping 8). The three properties form a continuous L shape and the design arrangements lend the bedrooms an increased sense of privacy idea for large groups. The reception accommodation in The Court is arranged as an enfilade with 40 foot vaulted double height great hall for music and dining for over 20 opening onto a large farmhouse kitchen with a reception room beyond with log burning stove set in a large fireplace.
The Hall
Works are ongoing to restore the house to its former manorial status. Now offering comfortable accommodation based on 4 double bedrooms with 2 bathrooms and a drawing room. The property is south facing, set in it’s own 70 acre mini estate, offering privacy and tranquility, with rural walks through parkland, woodland, and seaside cliff top walking nearby.
Ample parking next to the house offers easy unloading. The house is centrally heated and all character has been retained. It is furnished with many pieces of antique furniture and paintings, but with modern plumbing, mattresses and other conveniences. The kitchen has full cooking facilities with a fridge and freezer in the utility room, complete with the latest washing and drying machines. Cot and child facilities are available upon request. Satellite and other TVs are installed. All fuel, heating and lighting is included, as are bed linen and towels.
The owner of the estate lives in the Hall in his own self contained part of the building. Kitchen and dining facilities for the group are available in the Court building.
The Court
The Court has been formed using a combination of existing barns and an early servant's dwelling and centred on a great hall with double height vaulted timber ceiling. Exposed stone wall, and stone, oak and wide boarded pine flooring with Persian carpets and tribal rugs are used to enhance its character.
Great hall with ten-place dining table, sofas, exposed oak and stone floor, concert grand piano, full height feature fireplace with wood-burning stove and flat screen TV. Sitting room with multi-fuel stove in stone Tudor-style fireplace, sofa seating for six, additional seating for four and flat screen TV. Large well-equipped farmhouse-style kitchen with hand-made cabinets, electric range cooker, electric cooker, flat screen TV, table for six and additional sofa seating.
Double bedroom with exposed timber floor, rugs, en-suite bathroom. Reading room/conservatory with stone and brick floor, and seating for six. Utility/cloakroom. Grand oak and pine staircase modelled on Georgian original to first floor: Galleried landing area. Double bedroom with red pine floor and rugs. Twin-bedded room with zip and link beds, exposed red pine floor and en-suite bathroom. Second staircase to first floor: Galleried landing leading to one double and one twin-bedded room, each with bathroom.
The Cottage
Spacious open-plan living/dining-room with multi-fuel stove, wooden floor and large galley-style kitchen with tiled floor. First floor: Double bedroom with 5ft bed. Twin-bedded room (zip & link beds) with en-suite bathroom with over-bath shower. Bathroom/WC with separate shower cubicle.
The surrounding countryside is a walker's paradise with cliff-top walks along the coast and numerous deserted public footpaths alongside streams, through ravines and bluebell woods, and up onto the nearby moors.

There is a pub serving food at the end of the fields and the little fishing village of Staithes which are both only a 15-minute walk. Staithes provides a doctors surgery, pubs, restaurants, tea shops, post office, butchers, art gallery, antiques shop, museum and a convenience store.
Within 2 Miles
The estate sits on the edge of the village of Staithes which is a quiet fishing village with scenic harbour. Nearby Runswick bay, also a fishing village has panoramic views of the bay, with an extensive sandy beach.
Boulby has the highest cliffs in England. Cliff top walks and deeply wooded ravines with streams, wildlife and a profusion of bluebells.

Saltburn pier and cliff lift, with victorian promenade and impressive buildings. Also a local hot spot for surfing.

Robin Hoods Bay and Sandsend both popular tourist locations offering peaceful beaches.

The venue features several large reception areas for communal dining and group activities and is ideal for work school or college re-unions, study or lecture groups, character building and team development, outdoor or indoor plays, concerts, games can be held.
The venue is particularly attractive for weddings. The car parking can accommodate over 30 cars plus more under cover in the large barns. The gardens, orchards, woods and walk ways with gothic details and statuary and ancient moat make ideal photo settings. The whole estate can be exclusively booked for up to 29 guests with communal dining for up to 120. Our full catering service can attend to all aspects of any wedding from invitation cards, flowers, table settings, wedding cars wedding feast to the evening party. Your guests can stay over for a few more nights before and after the event.
- Security deposit: £1000. This is paid prior to arrival and will be refunded in full after departure subject to damage inspection.

- End of stay cleaning: Included. Please leave the property in the state that you found it.
