Bevan House is a beautiful and luxurious country house for your exclusive use close to Hay-on-Wye, The Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons. This wonderful welsh mansion with its 50 acres of gardens and parkland will be your home for the duration of your stay.
Crisp white linen, deep down duvets, wonderfully comfortable beds, fresh flowers from the garden, log fires, piping hot water, a morning maid service all make up the luxury and style of Bevan House.
Experience the privacy and calmness of the house in a group of up to 18 adults – be it for entertaining clients, colleagues from work, for friends and family – we will tailor-make your stay according to your requirements. So far the house has been used for dinner parties, anniversaries and birthdays, shooting parties and good old-fashioned weekends in the country.
The house was originally purchased in the early to mid 20th Century by Sir David Evans Bevan and used as a shooting lodge to entertain friends and business associates. The original l7th Century farmhouse is a small part of the splendid early Victorian country house that now stands on the site. The 17th Century mill from which the house gets its name has long been demolished. It is possible, when walking through the house and gardens, to speculate on which sections are the earliest and where the mill may have stood.
The present house was extensively remodelled about one hundred and fifty years ago and remains externally much the same today with large Georgian windows in an elegant painted and portioned facade. The roof is arranged in a series of pretty gables and slated pitches. The immediate grounds around the house have large lawns stretching down to the burbling Triffrwd River where the mill once stood. To the left of the house is a large Edwardian stable block with its own courtyard and entrance, which also gives access to the rear of the house. Internally the elegant staircase was added and the principal reception rooms and bedrooms were beautifully remodelled in the 1920's.
Ground Floor: Dining Room, Morning Room, Drawing Room, Cloak Room, Large country kitchen with Aga, Library, Billiard room, Conservatory.
First Floor: 9 large double bedrooms, four of which can be twins or doubles and 7 bathrooms.
The house is set in 50 acres of wonderfully wild gardens and parkland. Bordered on the south side by the river, their framework marked by sweeping lawns and majestic historic trees, the gardens are undergoing extensive renovation after a period in the shadows, to return them to a 21c version of their original 19c landscaped splendour. The fully restored formal circular pond beyond is centrally planted with white flowers, and filled with water lilies.
Behind the house spring bulbs also flood the wild woodland garden, the pathways leading through ranks of daffodils, then bluebells and camassia, later roses and clematis spill down the walls and wild flowers take over underfoot. At the eastern end, rhododendrons take over, forming a dense screen to the lane and the river, specimen trees include a stunning magnolia, and a small fruit orchard leads to the river's edge.
Alongside the west of the house a charming sitting and dining garden has been created, a large table and barbecue sit on the generous stone flagged area, bordered by scented flowers and fresh herbs for the pot.
